I received my MSW from Columbia University and have been a clinician for 8 years. I incorporate CBT with a psychodynamic approach in order to both affirm and challenge clients. My practice is rooted in a strengths-based and person-centered approach. To help you meet your goals, I prioritize understanding you and where your identity, values, and life experiences intersect.
People want to be heard and understood. I am here to listen and partner with you, as we navigate through your feelings. As we begin, an array of emotions may come up for you, that’s to be expected. But, know that I am here to provide you with a non-judgmental, patient, and empathetic space where you can express yourself freely. By taking an eclectic approach, I encourage you to be an active participant throughout the therapeutic process. I look forward to joining you on your journey of self awareness and clarity. Welcome, my name is Valerie. Since receiving my Masters in Social Work at Columbia University in 2014, I have worked with diverse populations and several topics like depression, anxiety, grief, managing medical illnesses, relationship issues, etc. I also have a passion for supporting parents of special needs children. I’m excited to get to know you and see how I can be of help to you!
Therapy can seem daunting, and you may be hesitant to start, but you've already taken the first step! As a therapist, my goal is to help you reach your own goals and to provide guidance and support to get there. I aim to create a safe and inclusive space, where my clients can express themselves and explore their own worlds without judgments. I encourage open communication and humor within our sessions, as I want my clients to feel comfortable and welcomed!
My path to becoming a therapist grew from a longstanding curiosity about mental health and a desire to better understand ourselves and the experiences that shape us. I studied psychology at the University of Rochester, where I researched motivation under stress and suicidal and self-injurious behaviors, before earning my master’s in Mental Health Counseling at NYU, where I began my clinical training in inpatient psychiatry. Working with people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives deepened my appreciation for the power of a therapeutic relationship and ultimately led me to private practice.
